In response to the demand from the industrial world for the finer and dispersion, Inoue Mfg., Inc. developed a continuous annular type bead mill (Spike Mill) in collaboration with Yokohama National University. Mill base particles can be dispersed and distributed within a fine and sharp range less than 1/3 of the residence time versus the conventional bead mill because of unique plug-flow movement by the Spike Mill.
The Spike Mill has been patented in the Japan, U.S.A and EC.

Features
■Annular type
The Spike Mill is an annular type wet grinding mill. The rotation of the rotor gives momentum to the beads in the annular gap between the inner vessel and the rotor cylinder, creating effective force for grinding, shearing, and frictionally crushing the mill base.
■Plug-Flow
Different from the conventional bead mill of disc type or pin type, the rotation of the Spike Mill rotor with its specially designed rhombic pattern surface creates a close movement to the plug-flow in the narrow gap between the inner vessel and the rotor.
■Residence time distribution
When residence time distribution of the Spike Mill is measured by the impulse response method, the Spike Mill has a sharper residence time distribution curve than the conventional bead mill.
■Short-pass preventing structure
Due to the plug-flow of uniform speed and a simpler structure than that of the conventional bead mill, the Spike Mill has little dead space, which prevents short-pass.
■Grinding and impact forces
With special protuberances on the cylindrical rotor surface, shearing force, impact force and frictional crushing force are extremely strong.
■Even temperature distribution
Having a rotor of unique structure, grinding energy is evenly distributed inside the vessel, so that applicable mill base temperature range can be expanded due to less partial heat generation.
■Cooling
The original Super Jacket cooling system in the vessel and another cooling system in the rotor produce excellent cooling effects.
■Mill base viscosity
Due to the high density of grinding and dispersing energy, the Spike Mill can process mill base of widely ranged viscosity.
■Small mill base remainder
Very little volume of the mill base remains inside the vessel due to small quantity of grinding beads and the narrow gap featured by annular type design.
■Easy cleaning
The rotor has a single body structure so that vessel cleaning is quite easy. Furthermore, cleaning time of beads can be shortened, since the quantity of the charging beads is quite small.
■Facile replacement of production lot
The Spike Mill can be cleaned very easily because of simple structure and little mill base remainder, so that a variety of production lots can be replaced frequently and easily by the same machine.
■Small beads consumption
The running cost can be substantially saved because the Spike Mill operates with small quantity of beads grinding media.
■Low energy consumption
Energy consumption per unit is lower than that of the conventional bead mill, and operation costs can be saved economically.
■Abrasion resistance
As the vessel and the rotor are made of abrasion resistant special steel, contamination is rarely caused by abrasion. Ceramic vessels and rotos are also available as an option.
